The roles of each Caste in society
The roles of each caste in Indian Society is fixed. Each caste has a specific role in society i which they are born into. The following are the main castes in India, who falls under each category and what jobs they perform.
Brahmins
Brahmins are considered to be the highest caste and often perform jobs that are close to the Gods.These include people such as priests.
kshatriyas
Kshatriyas is constituted to the military elite.They are considered to be more active, brave and willing to die for their King and country. People in the Kshatriya caste were either warriors or kings.
vaisyas
People in this caste are considered to be of the lowest level of the 'twice born' (dvijas). The role of the Vaisyas are agricultural labour. Indian scriptures say that the Vaisyas job is 'cow protection'.
sudras
The Sudras perform functions of serving the 3 varna above them. Sudras are often labourers or servants.
pariah 'harijans'
These people are also known as 'untouchables'. This is often because this caste is in close or direct contact with the dead. They may perform cremations or work in a tannery. Although the Pariah are crucial to Indian society they are seen as outcasts.
